The Essex A ntiquarian. Vol. V. Salem, Mass., January, 1901. No. I. BABSON GENEALOGY. Widow I sabella Babson% bom about 1579, and her son James Babson, were in Salem as early as 1637, when she was a grantee of lands there. She lived in Gloucester as early as 1644, and died there A pril 6, i66r, aged eightyone. The uncommon name of Babson was often spelled Bapson in early times in Essex county. Mrs. Babson sonly child, so far as is known, was James Babson. He resided in Gloucester, and was a cooper. He married Eleanor Hill Nov. 16, 1647; and died Dec. 21, 1683. She remained his widow, and died in Gloucester March 14, 1714, aged eighty-four. Children, born in Gloucester :3 I. James, b Sept. 29, 1648. 4II. Eleanor, b. June 15, 1651. 5ni. Philip, b. Oct. 15, 1654. See below (J)- Sarah, b. Feb. 15, 1656; d. Jan. 19, 1675-6. Thomas, b. May 21, 1658; served in King Philip swar. JOHN, b. Nov. 27, 1660. See below Richard, b. June i, 1663. See below (9) 10 VIII. Elizabeth, b. Oct. 8, 1665; lived with her mother, unmarried, in 1704; probably m. Thomas Sheath May 18, 1716. Ebenezer ,b. Feb. 8, 1667-8; lived in Gloucester; d. young and unmarried. A bigail, b. May 13, 1670; probably m. Thomas Witham. 6IV. 7V. 8VI. 9VII. II IX. 12 X. Philip Babson3, born in Gloucester Oct. 15, 1654. He lived in Beverly in 1684 and 1685, and in Salem in 1689. He married Hannah Baker (B atter?) of Salem Oct. 22, 1689; and was dead in 1708 She died in 1692. Child, born in Salem :13 I. A nna, b. A ug. 22, 1690; probably m. Israel Hendricks, sojourner at Gloucester, March 15, 1719-20. 8J ohn Babson3, born in Gloucester Nov. 27, 1660. He lived in Gloucester, and is variously called in the records mariner, yeoman, tailor and shoreman. He married Dorcas Elwell Nov. 8, 1686. They both died in June, 1737. Children, born in Gloucester :14 I. Elias, b. Sept. 4, 1687; d. May 15, 1720. 15 II. James, b.
