The author, John Melia, spent 10 years studying for the priesthood, the first 7 in the Liverpool archdiocesan junior seminary near Wigan, and the last 3 at the English College, Valladolid, Spain. He withdrew from the English College in February, 1953, and after National Service in the R.A.F., studied to become a teacher. After almost 25 years working in Merseyside secondary schools, he is now retired, and lives in Southport. He and his wife, Rose-Mary, have three children and two grandchildren.
