Dahinter verbirgt sich nach Erfindung der Dampfmaschine, der Massenfertigung durch Elektrizität und der weiteren Automatisierung durch IT ein vierter industrieller Umbruch. Diese technologische Revolution unter Nutzung des Internets wird mit einschneidenden Auswirkungen auf die Produktionsabläufe in der Industriebranche in Zusammenhang gebracht. Im Kampf um Wettbewerbsvorteile deutscher Unternehmen und damit für den deutschen Standort wird mit Industrie 4.0 eine Chance verbunden.

Da eine getrennte Betrachtung von Industriebranche und Logistik nicht möglich ist, stehen logistische Prozesse im Visier des Umbruchs durch Industrie 4.0. Aufgrund der Globalisierung und damit der Zunahme der Komplexität logistischer Prozesse hat die Logistik zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen, in Deutschland repräsentiert sie mittlerweile den drittgrößten Wirtschaftsbereich nach der Automobilindustrie und dem Handel. Die logistischen Prozesse umfassen den innerbetrieblichen und überbetrieblichen Material- und Informationsfluss. Daher bleibt der Logistikbereich nicht unberührt von den Bewegungen von Industrie 4.0. Doch welche Berührungspunkte finden sich zwischen Industrie 4.0 und der Logistik? Es gilt festzustellen, was Industrie 4.0 konkret kennzeichnet und welche Technologien mit ihr in Verbindung gebracht werden. Davon ausgehend werden Aussagen zu den Auswirkungen auf den Logistikbereich getroffen.

Aus verschiedenen Quellen ergibt sich, dass Industrie 4.0 auf technologischen Innovationen beruht.

Daher erfolgen die Betrachtungen zu den Auswirkungen von Industrie 4.0 auf die logistischen Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme (IuK-Systeme). Speziell wird die Untersuchung auf die Bereiche der Produktions- und Lagerlogistik eingegrenzt.
