Durch die geringen Qualitätsunterschiede der Angebote, werden die Leistungen der Unternehmen für Konsumenten zunehmend austauschbar. Es ist deshalb Aufgabe des Marketing-Managements eines Unternehmens sich systematisch mit den gesellschaftlichen, technischen und ökonomischen Veränderungen und Trends zu befassen, um für das eigene Produkt bzw. die eigene Marke eine einzigartige, werthaltige und zukunftssichere Marktposition zu schaffen. Es ist also notwendig, sich am Markt zu positionieren.

Diez erklärt Positionierung wie folgt: „Unter Positionierung ist die gewünschte Verankerung eines Unternehmens oder einer Marke in den Köpfen der Konsumenten zu verstehen (Sollpositionierung). Sie erfolgt dabei immer in Abgrenzung zum Wettbewerb. Inhaltlich erfolgt die Positionierung anhand einer kommunikativen Leitidee, welche die Einheit der Kommunikationsbotschaften sicherstellen soll und in die sich alle weiteren Aussagen des Unternehmens integrieren lassen müssen“
Die Positionierung eines Produkts, einer Marke oder eines Unternehmens kann man auch als eine Standortzielbestimmung bezeichnen, die ein Un-ternehmen im jeweils relevanten Markt zu erreichen versucht. Diese Soll-position wird dadurch erreicht, dass spezifische Merkmalsdimensionen angenommen werden, immer unter Beachtung der Position befindlicher Wettbewerber auf dem Markt. Nach Festlegung dieser Positionierung sind alle Maßnahmen des Marketing-Mix gezielt an dieser Leitidee auszurichten.
