Bei der Literatursuche zeigte sich, wie auch Noelle-Neumann feststellte, dass dieses Thema bisher nicht zum Gegenstand der wissenschaftlichen Forschung geworden war. Außer ihr hatten sich lediglich ihre Studenten damit beschäftigt; Hinweise findet man nur noch in der Sozialpsychologie.
Es soll im folgenden versucht werden, einen Einblick in die Bedeutung der Isolationsfurcht innerhalb der Schweigespirale zu geben. Zunächst wird der Begriff der öffentlichen Meinung aus sozialpsychologischer Perspektive definiert, dann folgt eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Theorie der Schweigespirale. Im dritten Teil gehe ich näher auf das eigentliche Thema, die Isolationsfurcht, auf ihre Rolle in der Theorie sowie auf Bedingungen und Ursachen für ihre (Nicht-) Wirksamkeit ein. Dem schließt sich die Erläuterung drei verschiedener Vorgehensweisen zum Testen der Isolationsfurcht an. Nachdem auf verschiedene zum theoretischen Konzept der Schweigespirale geäußerten Kritikpunkte eingegangen wurde, werden in einer Schlussbetrachtung einige abschließende Überlegungen (zu dieser Thematik) aufgestellt.
